For centuries, the Orient has cultivated the dwarf potted tree called Bonsai (pronounced “bon-sigh”). A tiny dish, a handful of soil, and a living plant; has become a unique art. The literal translation of bonsai is “Tray Culture,” but the Japanese meaning of this term refers to the bringing of a desired part of nature into the home. Plant material can be found in the nursery, garden or in the countryside. The plants that may have the qualities of bonsai will require wiring and trimming to create the desired effect. Bonsai results when artistic horticultural technique and knowledge harmonize. Your participation and your involvement in it ever changing nature may bring you a sense of pleasure and relaxation. Except for a few varieties, ANY plant can be used for bonsai. The more popular plants being used are: Pines, Juniper, Cotoneasters, Elms, Maples, and Azaleas. There are many styles of bonsai as a copy of nature such as: Formal Upright, Cascade, Slanting, Windswept, Forest, Grove, Group Planting, Drift wood, Clump, Broom, etc. Once the desired shape is obtained, they are transplanted into suitable pots. The right containers should be used as if it can harmonize with the plant, such as a frame must match the picture. Like a painting, you can find bonsai costing from a few dollars to thousands of dollars. You can even find and help to create as family treasures to pass on and enjoy from generations to generations like some of the Japanese do.
